Bandon Beach Motel in winter
The view from Bandon Beach Motel is unsurpassed in Bandon. Perched on the bluffs on Coquille Point, you can watch the sun sparkle on the persistent surf or the storms howl and blast salt water spray onto your motel room window. Sometimes, you may see both on the same day.
Step out of your motel room and onto the Sate Park’s Oregon Island National Wildlife Refuge. Paved paths over the headland feature interpretive panels that share stories of the area’s wildlife and Native American history. Stairways are located on opposite sides of the headland and allow visitors to make a loop on the beach. Hike down the stairs immediately outside the motel and meander along the beach to see if the harbor seals are sunning themselves in front of the mammoth, elephant-like rock. Stand and watch the waves crash through the arch that defines the elephant’s trunk.
If the tide is out sneak through the caves to the back side and get a bird’s eye view of the Oregon ocean’s formidable, intimidating and endless battering of the rocks. Check out the tide pool invertebrates while you are there, then scramble over the sand path and through the boulders at the Point to explore more spectacular rock formations. Find the next set of stairs to circle back up and walk the paved path.
Look towards Bandon and see the Coquille River with the jetty on one side and the light house on the other. There may be fishing boats heading out or returning from the day’s catch. Head back to your room for that perfect cup of coffee and a beautiful view of the Bandon Coast.
Excellent Bandon Walks
For those who want a little more exercise and adventure it is a lovely walk to Face Rock lookout going south, or the jetty and Old Town Bandon heading north.
Coquille Point Bandon Oregon
Coquille Point is a marvelous place to observe seabirds and harbor seals, and to explore the beach. The point overlooks a series of offshore rocks of every shape and size--some come with their own legends like Face Rock and Cat and Kittens Rock--that provide habitat for Common Murre, Tufted Puffin, Western Gull and Brandt's Cormorant, as well as Harbor seal and rocky intertidal invertebrates.
